This 12 kg package consists of dry ice in the form of 3 mm pellets. This size is ideal for uniform cooling and sublimation. Dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) has a temperature of -79.8°C and is a powerful coolant that leaves no residue, as it transitions completely into CO₂ gas.

  • Never in the passenger cabin: Preferably transport the dry ice box in the trunk or a separate cargo area that is physically separated from the driver.
  • Ventilation: Set the car ventilation to the highest position (outside air, no recirculation) and crack a window if necessary.
  • Do not leave unattended: Never leave a car containing dry ice parked in direct sunlight or in an enclosed garage.

1. The Right Transport Box

  • Insulated but NOT airtight: Use a high-quality polystyrene (styropor) box or a professional EPP thermobox.
  • Explosion Hazard: Never seal the box hermetically (for example, do not use airtight food containers or tape the box completely shut). Because the gas expands, the pressure must always be able to escape, otherwise the packaging will rupture or explode.

2. Loading and Securing

  • Prevent shifting: Ensure the transport box stands upright and cannot tip over or slide during braking or cornering.
  • Labels: If the transport is for professional or commercial purposes, the packaging must be officially marked with a UN class label (UN 1845) and the net weight (12 kg) must be stated.

3. Unloading and Handling

  • Personal Protection: Always wear thick, insulated gloves when loading and unloading. The box itself can also feel extremely cold on the outside.
  • Direct to Destination: Drive directly to the location where the dry ice will be used or stored to keep sublimation loss as low as possible.

Usage & Storage

  • Storage Duration: Dry ice evaporates constantly, even in a good cooler box. Plan the purchase as close to the time of use as possible. Expect a loss of a few percent per hour.
  • No Freezer: Do not store dry ice in a standard freezer. The temperature of -78.5°C is much too low for a freezer, which can damage the thermostat and lead to unsafe situations.
  • Child Safe: Keep dry ice out of reach of children and pets at all times. It looks like ice cubes but is dangerous if swallowed.
