Why safety is crucial
Acetylene is chemically unstable and can decompose explosively at high pressure. To prevent this, the gas is dissolved under pressure in acetone, which is distributed within a porous mass inside the gas cylinder.
Essential operating procedures Because acetylene has specific storage and usage requirements, you must always adhere to the following guidelines:
- Always upright: Store and use the acetylene cylinder strictly in an upright position to prevent the gas from separating from the acetone.
- Let it rest: Gas cylinders that have been lying flat or have just been delivered must rest in an upright position for at least 1 to 2 hours before use.
- Protective clothing: Always wear heat-resistant clothing, a welding helmet or safety goggles, and gloves.
- No copper or silver: Acetylene reacts with copper and silver, which can lead to explosive copper acetylides. Therefore, do not use these materials.
