An Argon Ar - B05 gas cylinder is a specific 5-liter (water capacity) industrial gas cylinder filled with pure argon (usually Argon 4.6, which stands for 99.996% purity). Unlike acetylene, argon is an inert noble gas. This means it is absolutely non-flammable, non-toxic, and chemically completely stable. The B05 cylinder is primarily used as a high-quality shielding gas for TIG welding and MIG welding of aluminum, stainless steel (RVS), and specific alloys.

1. Specific welding processes and materials

  • TIG welding (Tungsten Inert Gas): This is the primary application for pure argon. The gas ensures a very stable, smooth welding arc and is indispensable for welding stainless steel (RVS), aluminum, and copper.
  • MIG welding (Metal Inert Gas): Used as a shielding gas for semi-automatic welding of non-ferrous metals, such as aluminum and magnesium alloys.

2. Situations in which the B05 cylinder is specifically used

Due to its compact size (approx. 55 cm high, 8–10 kg), the B05 cylinder is purchased or rented specifically for:

  • Mobile interventions: For service mechanics and installers who need to perform repair work on construction sites, roofs, in crawl spaces, or other hard-to-reach locations.
  • Hobbyists and small workshops: Ideal for welders who weld only sporadically (e.g., on classic cars or small structures) and do not want a large, heavy cylinder in their way.
  • Tacking / Spot welding: For quickly "tacking" stainless steel or aluminum parts on-site before they are definitively welded in the factory.

3. Alternative (non-welding) industrial applications

In smaller quantities (such as a B05 cylinder), pure argon is also used for:

  • Inerting and purging: Making small tanks or pipes oxygen-free to prevent fire hazards or internal oxidation.
  • Laboratory analysis: As a pure carrier gas or purge gas for analytical equipment (such as spectrometry).

Practical transport rules for the B5

  • Protective cap mandatory: Close the valve hand-tight and screw the plastic or steel protective cap onto the cylinder. If the cylinder falls and the valve breaks off, the 200 bar pressure escapes instantly, causing the cylinder to shoot away like a rocket.
  • Secure firmly (fasten): Due to the low height (approx. 55 cm) and weight (8–10 kg), B5 cylinders roll quickly in a trunk or cargo area. Secure the cylinder in a crate or fix it with a tension strap. Unlike acetylene, argon cylinders may be laid flat during transport, provided they are 100% clamped in place and cannot roll.
  • Maximum ventilation: Preferably transport the cylinder in a van with cargo area ventilation. Transporting it in a passenger car? Set the fan to the highest setting (no recirculation) or leave a window slightly open to prevent oxygen deficiency in the event of a micro-leak.
  • Never store permanently in the car: Remove the cylinder from the vehicle immediately after transport. A car parked in full sun can get warmer than 60°C inside, which causes dangerous pressure increases in the cylinder.
  • Fire extinguisher: Are you driving commercially with this cylinder? Then you are required to have an approved 2 kg powder fire extinguisher (ABC) in the vehicle, even though the gas itself is non-flammable.

Although argon is a safe, inert (non-flammable) noble gas, an Argon Ar - B5 gas cylinder is under an extremely high pressure of 200 bar. This brings specific physical risks. Below are the key guidelines for safety and transport according to current regulations.

1. Safety during use and storage

  • Asphyxiation risk in small spaces: Argon is non-toxic and non-flammable, but it is heavier than air. In the event of a large leak in a basement, pit, or small enclosed space, the gas sinks to the floor and displaces the oxygen. This can lead to unnoticed asphyxiation. Always ensure good ventilation at floor level.
  • High-pressure risks: The 200 bar pressure in the cylinder is massive. Therefore, never use a damaged pressure regulator or a reduction valve that is not explicitly suitable for argon (cylinder connection: RU3 - W24.32 x 1/14" right-hand external).
  • Color recognition: An argon cylinder is immediately recognizable by its dark green shoulder (RAL 6001) according to the European standard EN 1089-3. The rest of the cylinder is usually gray or green.
  • Storage: Store the B5 cylinder upright, protected against extreme heat (above 50°C) and direct sunlight, to prevent the internal pressure from rising too high.
