A Nitrogen (N₂) B20 gas cylinder is a medium-to-large industrial gas cylinder with a water capacity of 20 liters, filled with nitrogen under high pressure (200 or 300 bar). 

Nitrogen is stored in this cylinder as a high-pressure gas. Because nitrogen has no liquid phase at room temperature, the pressure on the manometer drops linearly as the cylinder empties. The B20 is a popular choice for users who want a substantial gas supply but still value a degree of portability within a working environment

  • Inert (non-reactive): Nitrogen hardly reacts with other substances under normal conditions, making it extremely suitable for preventing oxidation, fires, or explosions.
  • Colorless, odorless, and tasteless: The gas cannot be sensed, which means that additional safety measures (such as oxygen alarms) are necessary in confined or small spaces.
  • Non-flammable: Nitrogen does not support or feed combustion in any way.
  • Asphyxiant (displacing): In high concentrations, the gas displaces the available oxygen, posing a direct risk of suffocation.
  • Cylinder color coding (Indication): According to the European standard (EN 1089-3), the shoulder of a nitrogen cylinder is always marked in black.

Transport & Use:

  • Fixation: Due to its weight and size, vertical fixation with ratchet straps or a sturdy cylinder holder in a vehicle is mandatory. Ensure the cylinder can never slide or tip over.
  • Transport documentation: For commercial transport, the UN code (UN 1066, Nitrogen, compressed, 2.2) is important. Ensure your vehicle complies with safety regulations for transporting hazardous materials (ADR).
  • Storage: Preferably store cylinders in a dry, well-ventilated room and protect them from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.

Specific safety information for Nitrogen (N₂):

  • Asphyxiation hazard (Priority 1): A B20 cylinder contains a significant amount of nitrogen gas. A leak in a closed or moderately ventilated room displaces oxygen in the air unnoticed. Good ventilation is always required.
  • High-pressure system: The cylinder is under high pressure (200/300 bar). Ensure that the pressure regulator and hoses are correctly coupled and suitable for the respective inlet pressure.
  • No freezing issues: Because nitrogen is a gas under pressure (and not a liquid in the cylinder like CO₂), the valve is less susceptible to freezing at normal flow rates.
  • Valve safety: The valve is the most vulnerable point. Always use the protective cap during transport or storage.
